Audio Entry #1

Listen to andrew read this entry1:55 · Audio plays on this page

I recorded an audio entry. I'm curious what people think about it and the little player and stuff like that. The entry itself is just really talking about the concept of audio entries. Which are something that people have discussed with me in the past and I've never known what to do with on here. And that is what this entry kind of talks about. If you listen to it and have any thoughts, let me know in the comments.

I think adding audio to our journals makes as much sense as adding photos, I don't find it superfluous at all.

@kinston Excellent, thanks!!

Ungermane I think is the word you're looking for. I can see it being helpful for elderly people. I will pass though for voice cloning fears.
Andrew S@andrewJul 29, 2026Author
@irma-fairy I had not heard of Ungermane, but I just googled it, and yes, nice! Also I had not even considered the voice cloning thing, that's suuuuch a good point. If I do launch this site-wide, I will put a note about that when you opt-in, thank you so much for mentioning that! I really get VERY scared about that stuff.

This is cool! I worry about voice cloning myself, but my voice is certainly out online.

This is a neat addition. I don't mind the idea. Diaryland had always held a special place in my heart. I'm so happy you updated the site. I'm glad you didn't forget about us!!

@alienamiss it is so funny, like yeah, the voice cloning thing is so bad, I totally worry about it, but I also have my voice out there, different places, and I never really think about it. Ay yay yay. But also thank you because as I mentioned to you in a direct message, the reason I kind of got back to this feature was seeing you mention your audio diary today. And I think I'm gonna launch this in the next day or less.

I really like the idea, although I suspect people would find it funny when my southeast Texas twang came out of my mouth. (And if y’all do, well, bless your heart.)

Also, it would give me a reason to record myself and see how things were different before I have my vocal cords sewn up. I’ve been thinking about this off and on, mostly off since that’s at least two years off.

@restlessmind I didn't even think of that idea, yeah, I guess if people start using this, and you hear their accent, it might be funny, you might not expect it! I never assume anybody has a Texas twang, but I guess a lot of people do!

Oh my goodness, I have so many thoughts on this (of course)
I will only say a few
I love hearing people's voices, it was nice to hear yours. Now I know what 3 people here sound like.
In the age of texting, it is so easy to read text and overlay your own meaning. I think much get lost in text. However diaryland is not text, it is like reading a book.
How many of you have had the privilege of going to an in person reading of your favorite author? I have not. I personally would love to hear how an author wants their words to be read. Good golly, if Ernst actually read one of his stories ( well depending on which one) you all would be in stitches peeing your pants.
Inflection!!!!! That is the word my silly brain was trying to come up with, it makes a huge difference.
I agree people should read, people should write , but a reading , that would be more intimate . You only get the true inflection when the author reads their work.

@cherrychapstick totally, I love this comment! I have been to one or two book readings in my life, and it really is interesting. I think when I was a lot younger, I thought it was kind of pointless, sort of like why am I here just hearing an author read from their book… If I care about their book, I will just read it. But now I do realize it's just kind of a cool experience hearing them read it, exactly like you said.

I wonder, once this feature is deployed in the next day or so, if people do start using it to some extent, I wonder how many will just read the entry that they posted and how many will just say something else, or maybe just record a message but not actually type it out. Hopefully people use it and we find out!

@andrew I might need a private lesson on how it is all going to work( not in the creepy way) I keep meaning to get back to a book I have been writing, I think I have 80 pages so. I think that is one that I would release a chapter with sound. I don't think anything is ever going to come of it. I need to get back on it.
So Question- how do you record?I know many use their phone for so many things, but I am on a IMac? Ibook... whatever it is called. My name should really be analog girl
I don't think I know the first step of recording my voice. Well other than this temporary time after one of my concussions that I was doing karaoke on sing snap
I will save that for an entry. Obviously I have not recovered fully.

This is fantastic! You're adding so many features to this place, I can't keep up!
Andrew S@andrewJul 31, 2026Author
@kelsi Hahah I can't keep up with myself!

I definitely would not use it because I prefer my anonymity here. That being said, I do think it makes sense to add it as an alternate way for people to communicate should they need or want.

I think it works, especially if you are unable to sit down and write. Say you're out on a walk and you want to get your thoughts recorded and you won't have time later. It would be perfect.

Then have an option to transcribe the audio would be perfect if you aren't in a place to listen to someone's entry. It would be perfect.
